The Kenya Human Rights Commission and the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission last year launched the first African gay and lesbian awards to honour lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexual and intersex people for their contributions to Kenyan society.

Strong indications have now emerged that the event might be hosted in Nigeria this year as human right groups look to show support for the Nigerian gay community.

The event, which was held at Charter Hall in Nairobi, saw politicians, employers and journalists awarded for their commitment to advancing equality and social acceptance for same-sex relationships in Kenya.

The aim was to encourage inclusion, tolerance and a respect for sexual diversity, one of the event’s organisers, Erick Gitari, told reporters.

Extending equal rights to people in same-sex relationships is a source of contention in Kenya.

Sodomy is punishable under Kenyan law with a penalty of five to 14 years imprisonment and homosexuality is a taboo for many in a country where religion is strong.

In November 2010 supporters and members of the gay and lesbian community blasted Prime Minister Raila Odinga for saying anyone engaging in homosexual activity should be arrested.

In February the same year an armed group raided a government health centre that provides HIV/Aids services to the community.

The group insisted they were trying to "flush out the gays”’, according to a Human Rights Watch report.

Cancer Treatable & Curable If Detected Early – Experts

Cancer is treatable and curable if detected early according to medical experts in the country who spoke at a symposium in focus of theme of the 2013 World Cancer Day: “Dispel damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer: Did You Know?”.
At the event organised by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, NIMR, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris said the  belief that cancer was a death sentence was not only incorrect but popularise by nasty experiences of those who present their cases late in hospitals.
Idris who was represented by the State Acting Director of Disease Control, Dr. Bakare Omowumi also dismissed the misconception that cancer is a disease of the wealthy,  adding that,  “the disease  is rampant in both middle and low income countries of the world, including Nigeria.”
Also speaking, Director General, NIMR, Professor  Innocent Ujah, lamented that cancer had become a hydra-headed disease that needs support of every Nigerian to overcome.

Dermatologist says dandruff not caused by poor hygiene

The belief that dandruff is caused by poor hygiene is erroneous, a dermatologist, Dr Ayesha Akinkugbe, said on Friday.
Akinkugbe, a Consultant at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Akinkugbe said: ``Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that causes flakes of skin to appear.
`` It is a common condition that is not easy to treat; it causes itching and can be embarrassing.
``Anybody can have dandruff; even babies do have dandruff, at times.
``Most often, dandruff begins in young adulthood and continues through middle age; it can be a lifelong condition for some people.’’
She explained that dandruff was not infectious and also not a sign of poor hygiene or unkempt hair.
``It is more of a cosmetic problem than a medical problem,” Akinkugbe said.
According to her, dandruff can be caused by different things.
``It may be caused by the presence of yeast in the scalp, sensitivity to hair care products or certain ingredients in hair care products or hair dyes.
``Stress and negative emotions have been known to also play a significant part in skin conditions such as dandruff,” she said.
The doctor said that dry skin, oily hair and scalp, poor diet, eczema and other skin disorders might predispose some people to having dandruff.
``Also, patients recovering from heart attack and stroke, and some people with weak immune system may have dandruff more often than other people,’’ she said.
Akinkugbe added that people suffering from Parkinson's disease were likely to have dandruff.
She advised people with dandruff to control it by using medicated shampoo.
``People with dandruff are usually advised to wash their hair with medicated shampoo daily; after some time, they can reduce it to once or twice a week.
``Sometimes, changing from one shampoo to another can help if you find out that a particular shampoo is becoming less effective.
``It is important to use a product that suits you best and avoid excessive use of hair products like dyes, ‘’ she urged. (NAN)

Akunyili Wins U.S. Healthcare Leadership Award

New York - Prof. Dora Akunyili, the former Minister of Information, was on Saturday honoured with the 2013 Healthcare Foundation Leadership Award in the U.S., According to reports.

The award took place at the 8th Annual Faces of Hope Banquet, organised by the Hackensack University Health Network in New Jersey, in partnership with the Nigerian Healthcare Foundation (NHF), a U.S. based firm.

Also Dr Ambrose Mgbako, a U.S-based Psychiatrist, was honoured with the 2013 "Legacy Humanitarian Award''.

Presenting the award, the Chairman of Hackensack University Medical Centre, Dr Jeffrey Boscamp, commended the former Director-General of the Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for her industry and commitment to the values of honesty, transparency and selfless service.

He noted that Akunyili’s immense contribution to the fight against fake medicine in Nigeria and West African Sub-region would always be remembered, particularly her visionary leadership in healthcare.

"Akunyili has received more than 600 awards and recognition locally and internationally,’’ Boscamp stressed.

In her response, Akunyili said she regarded the award as special because it came more than four years after she had left office as the Director-General of NAFDAC, a position I used to intensely fight against fake medicines not only in Nigeria but also in West African sub-region.

"With this award, I am encouraged and motivated to work even harder not only in contributing to the fight against counterfeit medicine but also in the development of our dear country Nigeria.

"For me to be honoured here today proves that Nigerians, not only at home but also in the Diaspora, continue to appreciate my contribution in the fight against counterfeit medicine.

"In fact, as I am receiving this award, I am also being honoured back home with the Outstanding Achievement/Performance Award by the Nigerian Law School, Abuja, Students’ Representative Council as part of the Golden Jubilee celebration of that great institution.

"Since I could not possibly be at two different places at the same time, I arranged for someone to represent me at that event which took place today at Abuja,’’ she said.

Akunyili, however, noted that even though drug counterfeiting was a global problem, developing countries were more affected by the menace.

She added that the poor suffered the brunt because they lived under unhealthy conditions, feed poorly and were consequently more predisposed to ailments.

"Drug counterfeiting is one of the greatest atrocities of our time. It is mass murder. It is a form of terrorism against public health as well as an act of economic sabotage. Counterfeit drugs violate the right to life of innocent victims.

"Counterfeit Drug Merchants operated in Nigeria unchallenged for over three decades. It was a powerful Mafia coordinated through a transnational criminal network.

"They dumped fake drugs, unwholesome foods and other substandard regulated products in Nigeria until 2001 when I came on board as the Director-General of NAFDAC.

"Nigerians and the whole of the West African sub-region were at the mercy of counterfeit drug dealers. Corruption and lack of public awareness were the driving forces,’’ she stated.

According to her, consequently, Nigeria became rated as one of the countries with the highest incidence of fake/counterfeit drugs.

She also explained that the average incidence of counterfeit medicines was over 41 per cent from various studies done before 2001, while NAFDAC’s study in 2002 showed that 68 per cent of drugs in Nigeria were unregistered.

"Fake drugs embarrassed our health care providers and eroded the confidence of the public in our healthcare delivery system. It led to treatment failures, development of drug resistance and death.

"As people were dying, legitimate businesses were collapsing. Many multinational companies left Nigeria or divested out of frustration due to unfair competition with the counterfeiters.

"Made-in-Nigeria drugs were banned by other West African countries.’’

She, however, dedicated the award to the countless individuals and groups in Nigeria, toiling quietly and often without recognition to protect public health, and also to all those innocent people who have died from the use of fake drugs.

FG approves free diabetes treatment for children in government hospitals - Health Minister

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, says the treatment of diabetes in children is free in all the government hospitals.

Chukwu said this during the Ministerial Platform on Thursday in Abuja.
``I know a number of hospitals that are implementing the policy of federal ministry of health; we issued a policy statement because we have to do things we can afford.
``what has killed this country before is that we were handing what we couldn’t sustain.
``Right now the policy of federal government is that for children who are diabetic, they gave their insulin free in all our hospitals.
``So I am telling you if some CMDs are not implementing it,  that is the policy we put on papers `for children with diabetics Federal Government  Hospitals are providing the insulin free of charge, we have started with that’.’’
Chukwu said that in Jan. 2012, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital recorded a breakthrough in the infusion of sell cells into sickle anemia patient.
He said laparoscopic surgery had commenced at the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe and that Geriatric Units had also been established in Federal Tertiary Hospital.
The minister said in 2012, three hospitals carried out kidney transplant which are Lagos University Teaching Hospital, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and St Nicholas Hospital, Lagos.
He said open heart surgery had resumed in Nigeria at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ozala, Enugu State after eight years.
``This year we resumed open heart surgery at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ozala, and we are making efforts to ensure most people do not travel abroad again for medical treatment.
``For eight years we have not been able to do any open heart surgery, but the country has been striving to improve on its health services,’’ he said.
Chukwu said microsurgery of the brain had also commenced in the country at the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia.
Others are total knee and hip replacement at the National Orthopaedic Hospitals in Enugu, Igbobi, Lagos, Federal Medical centre Yenagoa and University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
The minister said cancer screening was free in all the Federal hospitals adding that the vaccine of Human papillomavirus (HPV) cost N500.
He said the government would still strive more to provide quality and affordable health care to all Nigerians adding that with such people would no longer go aboard for treatment. (NAN)

Men are the major cause of women's menopause, study claims

Can women blame men for menopause? They may have a case, according to new research that suggests it was men's interest in mating with younger females that gave evolutionary rise to menopause by sidelining older women from reproduction. Menopause - when a woman stops getting menstrual periods and can't become pregnant - is unique to humans and its cause is still unknown, explained study author and evolutionary biologist Rama Singh. "We accept as a given the idea that older women tend to be unable to reproduce," but Singh said this is actually an "evolutionary puzzle." It has long been thought that menopause is what causes women, primarily in their early 50s, to stop being able to get pregnant, but the researchers found evidence that things could actually have occurred the other way around. In other words, infertility may have been the cause, not the effect, of menopause in early humans. Many theories behind cause of menopause There are at least 10 theories of why menopause occurs, according to the researchers, including ideas based on the fact that women are living longer and depleting the number of eggs in their ovaries, to what is called the "grandmother hypothesis." That idea holds that menopause allows older women to provide childcare that contributes to the survival of their grandchildren, making them more fit or valuable to the human tribe. But Singh's research, published online in the journal PLOS Computational Biology, suggests something altogether new. "This paper is saying that men have played the major or dominant part in choosing mates," said Singh, who is a professor of population genetics and evolution at McMaster University, in Canada. "Somewhere along the line in our evolutionary history, males did not mate randomly but preferred young women because they are more attractive." Going way back in human history, people reproduced all their lives, explained Singh. While it's possible that some women may have experienced menopause 30 000 years ago, now 100% of women experience it. "Menopause is an evolutionary phenomenon," he said. The scientists found that the development of menopause seems to have done nothing to improve the chances of human survival over time, but rather occurred because women of a certain age weren't finding mates, and thus reproductive ability was unnecessary for them. Yet Singh pointed out that if women long ago had been the ones choosing younger mates, older men would have been the ones losing their fertility, not women. 'Natural selection' The process of natural selection favors the most fit, so women who are most likely to reproduce are protected, explained Singh. Natural selection is the gradual, non-random process through which biological traits become either more or less common, due to the way reproduction occurs, Singh explained. The researchers used computational models and computer simulations to show how male mating preference for younger females could increase the number of mutations that stopped women's reproductive ability, creating menopause. Singh said his research suggests that it might be possible for women who delay childbearing to also postpone menopause, allowing them to have a longer window in which to conceive. "We might be able to extend the time period in which you can have children, rather than rush it," he said. Lynnette Leidy Sievert, a biological anthropologist and a professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, raised questions about the study. "The study showed that by the age of 50 or 60, 50% of the population was still living, but that just doesn't match what we know about human evolution," she said. "By the age of 50, the skeletal evidence shows that only 10 percent of Neanderthals lived beyond 50. Our own homo sapiens [humans] had about 17% living past the age of 40." Sievert, a member of the board of trustees of the North American Menopause Society, also questioned whether the concept of men mating with younger women fully explains menopause. "Because it's a human and mammalian pattern for men to die younger [than women], you have a younger female with an older male who is going to die," she explained. "I get mixed up about how that pulls a woman's lifespan across menopause." Singh said he's planning to do more simulations based on a Canadian long-term study of aging that is following 50,000 men and women. He is interested in learning more about the relationship between menopause, reproduction and genetic markers. "I really want to see if you can do something to delay menopause," he explained. - Health Day

Fruits, vegetables high in antioxidants, says nutritionist

A nutritionist, Ms Ngozi Eze, has stressed the need for increased consumption of fruits and vegetables instead of carbohydrate foods, because of their antioxidant content.

Eze told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday that fruits and vegetables protect humans against chronic diseases, such as cancer and aneamia,

Antioxidants are substances which protect the cells against the effects of free radicals, while free radicals are molecules produced when the body breaks down food.

According to the nutritionist, antioxidants help to fight and counter the harmful effects of unstable molecules in human bodies called `free radicals', which can cause various types of cancers.

Eze said research had shown that due to the high level of antioxidants in apples, eating one a day would reduce the risk of breast, lung and prostate cancer.

``Apples have also been confirmed to improve memory and learning and slows down ageing.

``Apples contain pectin, a soluble fiber that helps to lower blood cholesterol.

``Fruits such as oranges, aside from being rich in Vitamin C, have folic acid and fibre.

``Folic acid helps in blood production, while fibre cleans the intestines and aids it to function properly.’’

Eze advised people to consume more water melon as it hydrates the body and is rich in iron that strengthens and protects all the organs in the body.

``Water melon is also essential for menstruating, pregnant and lactating women, who lack iron; lack of results in anaemia.’’

She also suggested increased consumption of carrots as it is very rich in Vitamin A and beta-carotene, which is useful in improving vision.

``Carrots also prevent eye-related diseases such as cataracts and also help the heart to function properly and strengthen the immune system’’, she added. (NAN)

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members killed a soldier and abducted three others during an attack on the soldiers on Thursday night in Potiskum, Yobe State, a military source revealed.

This is according to reports by local online news agency Premium Times. Africa Eagle can however not independently verify at this time.

The source, who sought anonymity as he is not permitted to talk to journalists, said the corpse of the deceased soldier was brought from Potiskum and deposited at a hospital morgue in Damaturu, the state capital.

“The attack was a bad one because a soldier was killed and the terrorists kidnapped three other soldiers to an unknown destination,” he said on Friday.

“Some of our search team are combing within and outside the neighborhoods of Potiskum for the missing soldiers. A helicopter gun ship had been deployed from Maiduguri to join in the search team this morning,” he added.

The soldier also revealed that three soldiers were killed and two seriously injured two weeks back during an attack that also led to the killing of secondary school students by suspected Boko Haram members in Damaturu.

The gunmen had killed seven secondary school students and two teachers when they attacked Government Secondary School, Damaturu. The gunmen also attacked a military check-point.

The Joint Task Force in Yobe had claimed that no soldier was killed in the attack, and only one was injured, while two of the gunmen were killed; a claim our source says is not true.

“It wasn’t true that only a soldier sustained injury in that attack. The terrorists actually invaded the room where the soldiers were sleeping at night at shot the three of them dead. Two others only sustained injury during a separate attack on the same night. Soldiers were able to kill one of the terrorists and arrested one alive,” the source said.

The spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, Chris Olukolade, denied knowledge of the Thursday night attack and kidnap of the three soldiers.

“I have not got any of such report, normally they forward to us whatever happens in these areas and we’ve not had any of such reports,” Mr. Olukolade said.

Soldiers’ presence in Yobe, as well as Borno and Adamawa, was increased after the declaration of a State of Emergency in the three states by President Goodluck Jonathan. The military has declared major successes against the insurgents in the states with many of their training camps destroyed. The Boko Haram, however, claim they are winning the war against the Nigerian forces.

Several players of Nigeria’s Super Eagles have declared that they would not mind having controversial West Bromwich Albion attacker, Peter Odemwingie back in the team.

Odemwingie last featured for Nigeria in a 2012 Nations Cup qualifying game in Kigali, Rwanda in February 2011.

Head coach of the Nigeria national team, Stephen Keshi hinted in an interview this week that Odemwingie could get an unlikely recall to the national team.

"For (Odemwingie), he still has a place in the team. I'm not looking for an apology from him. (Odemwingie) is somebody that I like very well and he knows that. The thing is, it's about the team that I'm worried about,” Keshi said.

Inter Milan midfielder, Obiora Nwankwo has now praised Keshi for “this bold step” and believes Odemwingie’s return will bode well for the African champions.

“Having Odemwingie back in the national team will be a big plus. With all due respect to all the strikers in the team who have been working hard, Odemwingie is a very experienced striker who knows his way to goal,” said the 21-year-old currently on loan at Romanian club, CFR Cluj.

Nwankwo added that experience plays a big role in teams winning matches when the stakes are high and insisted that Keshi’s recent declarations are nothing short of a masterstroke.

“Talent alone is not just enough to win games. You need experience and that's where you need people like (Vincent) Enyeama, (Joseph) Yobo, (John) Mikel Obi and Odemwingie.

“The coach has acted like a father and we must respect that,” he said.

Enugu Rangers midfielder, Sunday Mba also added his voice to the issue and explained that Odemwingie’s potential and long years as a professional footballer would “help the team.”

“As footballers, our job is to go out there and play but experience is important in this game and I think Odemwingie will help the team in this regard,” he said.

Meanwhile, former psychologist of the Super Eagles, Robinson Okosun has dispelled notions that Odemwingie could act as a disruptive influence in the team.

“Odemwingie is not a troublesome person. I know him better than a lot of Nigerians do. I have worked with him for years in the national team and I can tell you he’s one of the nicest and friendliest persons you will ever meet.

“People have been talking about what happened at West Brom last season but all human beings pass through phases in their lives.

“What (Odemwingie) needs now is support of Nigerians and I commend Keshi for this bold step and he has now shown he’s a man of his words when he declared in the past that the striker is still part of his plans,” he said.

Odemwingie made his Nigeria debut in 2002 and has made 55 appearances scoring nine times for the Super Eagles.

If you have these symptoms, do HIV test

The war against HIV/AIDS is far from being over. This is because, globally, more than 34 million people now live with HIV/AIDS, while 3.3 million of them are under the age of 15.

According to, The Foundation for AIDS Research, which is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research, in 2011 alone, an estimated 2.5 million people were newly infected with HIV; and out of these, 330,000 were under the age of 15.

Sad to say, everyday, nearly 7,000 people contract HIV — nearly 300 every hour.

And, despite the giant strides made in the fight against this disease, in 2011, 1.7 million people died from AIDS, and 230,000 of them were under the age of 15.

Don’t impose your daughter on market women –PDP

Former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has been asked to rescind his decision to impose his daughter, Shade Tinubu-Ojo, as the new leader of market women in the state.

Peoples Democratic Party, in a statement on Monday by its Lagos Publicity Secretary, Taofik Gani, urged him to allow democracy to prevail in the selection of a new leader.

“You should allow the simple tenets of democracy to prevail in the selection of a new leader for the market women, more so as there is no cogent evidence that the nominee is a full-time market woman,” the statement said.

The former governor had allegedly announced the choice during the eighth day Firdau prayer for his mother and former leader of Association of Market Women and Men of Nigeria, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji.

The statement said, “The former governor plans to confirm this choice to market leaders at a meeting he has summoned for Tuesday (today) at his residence.

Explosion in Lagos as vandals rupture NNPC pipeline

There was an explosion in Lagos on Wednesday after vandals ruptured an oil pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation at Akinbo Island.

Newsmen learnt that the culprits came to the jetty in three barges and canoes around 1am and ruptured the splash zone of the pipeline and siphoned thousands of litres of petrol into jerry cans and operated for hours undeterred.

However, around 4.30am, there was a fire outbreak and the pipe through which they siphoned the fuel as well as a canoe were engulfed in flames.

Lamentations of a battered husband

I have known him for two years. He is one of those distant neighbours who had through casual interactions become a friend.  In the months that we lived together in the same neighbourhood and when we occasionally ran into one another, our conversation never went beyond the usual inquiry about the weather or the offhand question: “How is your family?”  As a casual friend and neighbour, I had observed him from a distance. He was introverted and easy-going, almost self-effacing. I knew him as someone who minded his business. He never got into trouble with anyone. That was as far as our friendship went until a year ago when I began to see him with a lady.
