With pre-season preparations beginning early next month for both City and Liverpool, the want-away star is keen to have his future sealed as soon as possible. With City's next bid likely to be their last, that wish could well be granted.
And a £50m move would smash the record fee for an Englishman set by £30m Manchester United signing Rio Ferdinand over a decade ago.
For their part, Liverpool have made it clear that no amount of money would change their stance that Sterling is not for sale.
While Sterling prepared to head home, his huge valuation was being criticised by former England international Ferdinand on Twitter.
The ex-Leeds United defender posted: 'English players are soooo overpriced right now it's a joke! (Harry) Kane & sterling have huge potential but 40m & 50m...(Sergio) aguero 38m & (Alexis) sanchez 32m!!!'
