The first German to play for Manchester United,Bastian Schweinsteiger said he is honoured to become the first
German player to play for Manchester United and believes the team can do a 'great job'
this season.
The World Cup winner joined the Red Devils in a £15million
deal from Bayern Munich on Saturday and is seen as the man to bring some
authority to United’s midfield.
Schweinsteiger is pleased to be the first of his countrymen
to play for Manchester United and told MUTV: 'It’s a big honour. I had a joke
with Wayne Rooney about it before, but it’s a big honour to be the first
German player here for the first team. It’s a great feeling.
Having spent the last 17 years with German giants Bayern in
the Bundesliga, Schweinsteiger is excited by his move to the Premier League and
is a regular watcher of the English top-flight.
'I’ve watched a lot of Premier League games; there are some
German players playing for Arsenal – Lukas Podolski is a friend of mine, so we
talk about the league,' he said.
'Every game is interesting and tough, so I’m looking forward
to playing in those games at a high level. I think we have a great team that
can do a great job.'
Schweinsteiger, who turns 31 in August, also revealed Louis
van Gaal is not the sole reason for his move to Old Trafford.
While the midifelder worked with the Dutchman during Van
Gaal's two years in charge of Bayern, Schweinsteiger insists the size of the
club was the biggest pull in his decision to move to England.
'Of course, I know him (Van Gaal) so it was a little bit
easier. It’s not about him, though; it’s more about the club, about Manchester
United.
'It’s such a big club with tradition and quality in the
team, and I think we’re capable of winning titles this season.
'Of course, Louis is a great coach and everything is good,
we’ll see how we do in the league.
